A Day without a gay? Are you serious?

My friend emails me this morning with what seems to be the latest protest action in the post California Proposition 8 passing called a Day Without a Gay, supposedly in the spirit of International Human Rights Day, Wednesday December 10th.

On December 10, 2008 the gay community will take a historic stance against hatred by donating love to a variety of different causes.

On December 10, you are encouraged not to call in sick to work. You are encouraged to call in “gay”–and donate your time to service!

So, what’s the real historic action? Calling in “gay” to your workplace at a time when people are losing their jobs left and right, or taking off work to volunteer with services that address hunger and poverty in our communities? And, of course, there’s a lot of that being experienced in the gay community as well, but you know like I do that issues of hunger, poverty, illiteracy, and domestic/gender violence impact every community regardless of your sexual orientation. And as far as history’s concerned, making a difference in someone’s day can be legendary enough.

There plenty of places in Dallas that could use your assistance, but make it bigger than you being gay. Who you choose to love and commit to is a human connection and bonding. Whether or not that love and commitment is considered a legal marriage in the eyes of the state or country is a different thing.
