I loved this song because the hook, “Each time I go to bed, I pray like Aretha Franklin”, made absolutely no sense. Enjoy!

Ok, now it’s getting spooky…
I credit this track with blowing my 11-year-old mind open to the possibilities of pop music. I wanted to *be* Green – he was so intelligent and stylish (as was this track). I remember getting the lyrics and desperately trying to work out what it was about. It was so rich.
There was a quote from the Old Testament written on the sleeve: “out of the strong came forth sweetness”. I made the connection with Aretha saying a little prayer for you and I was so impressed with that cross-referencing. Then he said that the ‘W.O.O.D’ spelling part was his attempt to do something like in Otis Redding & Carla Thomas’ Tramp, so there was a whole seam of music suddenly on my radar.
So, i went to the dictionary (or my mother) to find out what ‘intravenous’ ‘taboo’ and ‘Schizo’ meant. And what was a ‘Would be’?
And THEN I recall making my own extended mix version chopping about with a cassette deck and turntable.
So, basically I could put up a reasonably solid argument that this track nurtured a love of words and heightened my expectations of what pop could do.
Phew!
(Right, if you post anything about Odyssey’s Inside Out, Shalamar’s A Night To Remember or Carly Simon’s Why, we’re going to have to have a talk…
)
LOL! You might as well get ready for that talk
