Organization suggests bi-racial LGBT couples list person of color as HOH on 2010 Census

The volunteer collective, Our Families Count, exists to educate and motivate all LGBT individuals and households to be visible and counted for on the 2010 U.S. Census. Their website, www.ourfamiliescount.org, is maintained by Bilerico Media (of whom you may be very familiar with the Bilerico Project website.)

One of the several tips provided at the website of Our Families Count, is that bi-racial couples list the person of color as the Head of Household. Here’s their reason why.

Census reports some statistics based on the race/ethnicity of the “household”. In these cases, they categorize households by the race/ethnicity of Person 1 (head of household). Given that people of color are often under counted, LGBT people of color in bi-racial relationships should consider identifying as the head of household.
