On Dallas culture..

July 09, 2006 By: JW Richard Category: Art, Authors, Dallas, Education, Race relations, Racism No Comments →

go back and get it This week’s show deals with some history of Dallas education around the time of the Reconstruction and discuss modern African-influenced art and culture.

First, I share a snippet of a lecture that I recorded at the downtown Dallas library from professor and author, Michael Phillips. The results of his research are found in his book, “White Metropolis: Race, Ethnicity, and Religion in Dallas, 1841-2001“. The lecture was hosted by Democracy For America.

The music snippet is “Gnu York”, by Jason Smith. Special thanks to Alternity Records.

Welcome to listeners via Blubrry.com

Next is a conversation with Vicki Meek, artist and manager of the South Dallas Cultural Center. She talks about the genesis of the center and her initiatives to increase visiblity for original
artists and composers. We also talk about effort to bridge black and hispanic communities in Dallas, through the arts, as well as the future work of the South Dallas Cultural Center.
