Fundraiser on February 2 in Oak Cliff for Vecinos Unidos

Five years ago, when this podcast journey began on this site, I conducted my first interviews at an ice cream shop in the Bishop Arts District owned and operated by Rosa Lopez, called Suenos Sabrosos. While working at the ice cream shop and since its closure in 2007, she also serves at the executive director of Vecinos Unidos, a neigborhood based, 501(c)(3) non-profit organization founded in 1992 that helps individuals and families who earn 80% or below the area median income become first time homeowners as well as address neighborhood security, public services (streets, animal protection, parks, garbage, and postal service), education, health, and economic development.

Tonight, Tuesday, February 2nd from 7pm to 10pm, our neighborhood is coming together to help raise funds for Vecinos Unidos at the site of Rosa Lopez’s old store, now occupied by the equally wonderful Cafe Espumuso, 408 N. Bishop Avenue in Dallas. Hosting tonight’s event will be Tommie Kearney and among the features will be Oak Cliff literary rock star and co-owner of Cliff Notes Prolonged Media, Opalina Herebia-Salas. Stop by to listen or perform, learn more and donate to Vecinos Unidos, and grab some very tasty empanadas and a smoothie.

Cliff Notes is inviting you to a unique teaching opportunity

Carlos and Opalina Salas are looking for experts in their community to begin teaching classes as an outreach of their bookstore, Cliff Notes Prolonged Media, located on 416 N. Tyler Avenue in Oak Cliff. Here’s the word from Opalina:

We are now providing our community with a series of workshops to educate, enhance and entertain! We here at Cliff Notes Prolonged Media are asking YOU if you are an expert in something that you would like to donate your time to teach or present! Do you have expertise in taxes, bookeeping or organisation skills that you would like to pass on to our community? Do you have a mad crafting streak, do you knit, sew or decopage? Are you a math whiz or have vast knowledge of anything the kids in the neighborhood might need help tutoring with? Can you teach English , or Spansih as a second languange?
Can you run a small class of 8 to 10 people for 45 to 60 minutes on these subjects? Are you willing to donate your time or take a small donation for your services?

Let us know, as we have a small place for you to do your magic! Be a part of something bigger than yourself. Give of yourself and see how the world around you can change for the better.

A winter night out in the OC (Oak Cliff, that is)

It was great visiting with friends last night in Oak Cliff, starting with the Tyler/Davis Art Crawl. (The Tyler/Davis intersection is referred to by the locals as the “Bishop Arts Gateway”, as in a door to the established arts district further east on Bishop and Davis streets). Visiting artist from Houston, Hans Payan Geler, exhibited wonderful paintings inspired by gay bear culture at the Daniel Padilla Gallery. Opalina Herbert-Salas and her husband, Carlos, along with poet and artist, Josh Weir, brought great conversation over books at the Cliff Notes bookstore and the Mighty Fine Arts gallery across the street. So even in the cold, there was laughter in the air as well as music by local band, The Felons, at the Collision3 cancer research fund-raiser. Good times made better by supporting what’s local!

Tim Dillinger and Patsy Moore: A very special blend this Saturday night.

Helping me celebrate this podcast anniversary on Saturday night, September 19th, at Jack’s Backyard will be two artists that I respect for their passionate performances and song craft. Allow me to share more with you about Tim Dillinger and Patsy Moore.

In 2007, my friend, A.C. Coleman, (a great songwriter himself) turned me on to a internet broadcast called “Out The Box with Tim Dillinger”. As I listened to Tim and his connection to all things gospel and soul (he was born a “preacher’s kid” in St. Petersburg, Florida), I was intrigued about his own music. Then, I heard his CD, The Muse, and heard all those connections in his music that seemed like original tributes to Earth Wind and Fire, Teena Marie, and various inspirations from his deep Black gospel roots. Songs like the singles, “That’s the Kind of Love”, “That’s What I Feel”, “Seasons of Change” would play in my mind for days. On his MySpace account, he would share wonderful poetry from the heart. This poetry, as well as pieces of his personal story, were chronicled in his book, Snapshots, in 2008. A new music project and a new book are currently in production. Patsy Moore provided the essential soundtrack for me as I was growing through the motions of the Christian church with her 1991 Warner Brothers release, Regarding the Human Condition. This same album would chart in the Billboard Top 50. Her latest release, The Private Confessions of Saint Clair, continues the intimacy, the longing, and the questioning that attracted me then. In fact, I have Tim Dillinger to thank for reconnecting with Patsy Moore because of his amazing interview with her in 2008. Patsy also continues writing and scoring for television and film. New book store, Cliff Notes, on its way to Oak Cliff

Oak Cliff residents, Carlos and Opalina Herebia-Salas, are bringing a new bookstore to 416 N. Tyler Avenue called, Cliff Notes. The store is scheduled to open October 10, 2009. Both Carlos and Opalina have been fixtures in the local poetry scene including the monthly Mad Swirl set at Absinthe Lounge on first Wednesdays, and they have been operating a used book business as Subverse Verse online for a minute now. I’m looking forward to what reading delights this store will bring into Oak Cliff. They’ve even created a blog for us to keep up with their progress.
