Texas gay filmmaker, Marlon Riggs, celebrated this weeked at South Dallas Cultural Center

This weekend in Dallas, February 19 -21, Black Cinematheque Dallas, along with Fahari Arts Institute, DFW Senators, and Mandrake Arts & Media will be hosting a Marlon Riggs Film Festival. The films and shorts begin at 7pm each night at the South Dallas Cultural Center, 3400 S. Fitzhugh in Dallas and nightly entry fee is $10.

Riggs brought a core expression of black gay love and acceptance like never before with his film, “Tongues Untied”. This groundbreaking work is featured on Friday evening and is a must see for serious admirers of queer cinema. Following the films each night will be a riveting discussion conducted by different moderators each night. Here is a sample of “Tongues Untied”.

On Saturday, February 20th, Fahari Arts Institute will feature three shorts as a part of the Arts and AIDS program series. The Arts and AIDS program is designed to utilize the ARTS as a medium for AIDS outreach, prevention and treatment, by provoking dialogue and community engagement, supporting HIV+ artists, and preserving the rich legacy of those artists who have died as a result of the AIDS epidemic.

Among the films shown Saturday night will be Marlon Riggs’ “No Regret (Non, Je Ne Regrette Rien)” and a work by Julian Breece called, “The Young and Evil”. While Riggs’ film focuses on five sero-positives black gay men speak of their individual confrontation with AIDS, Breece’s film is a story about a defiant teen sets out to seduce an HIV prevention advocate into giving him the virus. Free HIV testing will be available. The following is a trailer of “The Young and Evil”.

Sunday, February 21, we will feature Riggs last film, “Black is, Black Ain’t”, which had to be completed by his co-director and friends due to his untimely death in 1994, due to complications with the AIDS virus.

All three nights promise great queer cinema, conversation, and healing. Come and be a part of it!

Dallas rocker, Jevette, rocking the radio for her birthday

This just in from one of this site’s Facebook fans, Stacy Crockett. This is going down Monday, January 11.

Come help me celebrate Sonya Jevette’s Birthday!!!!! She will be on the air with BikerFM.com’s Shelley Brooks @ 9PM and then at Backbeat Cafe @ The Mosaic Lofts in downtown Dallas at 11PM. Every year Sonya plays for her birthday and this year she will be gracing the stage in the listening room. Not only is it her birthday but she has been working on some new material so lets come out and show her lots of love and support.

Houston teen bullied and beaten with metal pipe because he’s gay

Another episode of violence against gay teens. This 16-year old boy now has a concussion and cuts and his face due to being beat up by bullies because he’s gay. Watch the video.

Now, given the environment in Houston with the potential of the city’s first gay mayor and the verbal attacks on her by religious fundamentalists, I can only imagine the tension that is in the air in various workplaces and schools. I stand in solidarity with my Houston LGBT family in seeking answers and appropriate actions of this school district and its officials.

Chad Gibson speaks out about Rainbow Lounge raid

With a blood clot behind his right eye, Chad Gibson is at home and he speaks to CBS 11 News reporter, Selena Hernandez, about the role he feels Ft. Worth Police still play in this raid of Rainbow Lounge in Ft. Worth on June 28, an event he is still unable to recall.

As Gibson recovers the gay community reacts, organizing another rally in the middle of Sundance Square in Fort Worth, as both sides continue their fight for answers.

“You know what, they need to accept responsibility of what they did to me and to everyone,” Gibson said. “That’s all I want – I want the truth.”

Meanwhile, the mayor of Ft. Worth, Mike Moncrief, is requesting an independent probe into the situation and the Ft. Worth Police chief, Jeffery Halstead, is still requesting anyone with information on that night to come forward. No official word yet on how many have come forward so far or how many need to come forward before this situation can be dealt with.
