Dallas-based entertainer, Lady B Smoove, and SmooveQ Entertainment brought a nice blend of hip-hop and poetry together on March 20 at the new venue, The Project House, 2607 Walnut Hill, in Dallas. Many special treats throughout the night including Desi music duo, Khayaal, and Houston-based artists, Samantha Levy and Tim’m West. Enjoy the pics from the event.

Mandrake FM talks with Tim'm West

I recently had a conversation with independent hip-hop artist, Tim’m West, who, along with being a Duke- and Stanford-educated lecturer, is definitely a pioneer in the gay hip-hop scene, infusing activism with every beat.

Our talk covers his queer hip-hop beginnings as an original member of the Bay Area crew, Deep Dickollective, to his latest solo release, In Security: The Golden Error. The project is available through CD Baby, several digital stores, and his website, reddirt.biz. Tim’m spoke with me from Houston, Texas.

On U.S. Inauguration Day, I spoke with David Rodriguez, one of the founders of Dallas-based event, ArtLoveMagic. We discuss his personal development as an artist and the genesis of the idea of ArtLoveMagic with co-founders, Michael Lagocki and Justin Nygren. Celebrating the end of a long U.S. presidential campaign and a new presidental, get to work jamming new tunes for the weekend.

Starting off the mix is Mid*One from his EP, Heaven Send a Synthesizer, presenting a scenario of being the object of unrequited love with, “Wrong Tree”. The EP made my top discs of 2008 and if you feel this, you will dig the whole project.

Next up is a crazy track by Mike Relm with Del the Funky Homosapien with, “Everytime”, from Relm’s new work, The Spectacle. Like Mid*One, Mike Relm is also from the Bay Area and is known for live performances which feature a series of audio mash-ups with video images, manipulated in real-time.

Houston represents next with the first single from Tim’m West‘s new one, In Security: The Golden Error, called “The F Word (feat. William Scott)”. The track comes from what I feel is Tim’m's most consistent musical solo work yet. I have several favorites tracks on this project.

So glad to hear more and more electronic artists working in hip-hop again. One artist from Detroit that needs to be known is Randy Murphy. From his latest work, The Tug of World EP, here’s the track, “Imperfect People”. Three words: Cop this CD!

From across the water (London) comes this fun jam called, “I Gotta Go” from K.O. and OD Hunte, from their new work, Back to the Hip-Hop. The fun continues continues with a electronic remix of RUN DMC’s classic “Hard Times” by house-man, Victor Imbres. I round this out with the new posthumous joint from Lisa “Left Eye” Lopes, with Chilli, T-Boz, and Missy Elliot with “Let’s Just Do It” from the project, Left-Eye Legacy, hitting your digital store on January 27, 2009.
